ŞİLE:
Blue & Green Discoveries

ŞİLE

Şile is one of the most popular visitation centres in Istanbul. The district, which is mostly preferred for weekend visits during the summer months, actually deserves more attention with its natural and cultural assets. Şile, of which 80 percent is forest area, has an exciting geography. It is the greenest and cleanest district in Istanbul with its streams and coastline more than 60 kilometres. It offers its visitors different exploration routes not only in summer but also in autumn.

Located on the Black Sea coast of Kocaeli Peninsula, Şile is one of 39 districts of Istanbul. Şile’s district border neighbours; Kandıra in the east, Gebze in the south, Beykoz and Ümraniye in the west. The population of Şile with a surface area of approximately 736 square kilometres is 34,241 people. By the law enacted in 2013, the number of neighbourhoods in Şile increased to 62. Thus, Şile become the district with the most neighbourhoods, and the third largest district in Istanbul by surface area. 65% of the people of Şile live in the villages.

In Şile, where the transition climate between the Black Sea and Mediterranean climates is dominant, the annual average temperature is 13.6 centigrade degrees. Since it is under the effect of the humid air masses from the Black Sea, the annual average relative humidity is between 70% and 80%. Since its north faces to the Black Sea, it is also under the effect of north winds such as northwest, north and northeaster. Therefore, if you visit Şile even in the summer months, you have the advantage of taking a vacation without getting exhausted from heat.

NATURAL BEAUTIES

Şile is the only district in Istanbul with two blue flag award-winning beaches, with a coastline of approximately 60 kilometres. With the BSB 79 ECOTOUR-NET project carried out under the leadership of the Şile District Governorship and as part of the Joint Operational Programme Black Sea Basin 2014-2020, where the Presidency of European Union, Directorate General of Financial Cooperation and Project Implementation serves as the national authority, it was aimed to spread ecotourism in Şile.

Yeniköy and Sarıkavak Castle hiking trails and Teke Köy and Sakılgöl cycling trails, which were recently opened within the scope of the project, will provide the opportunity to easily discover the natural beauties of Şile. Nature lovers, who enjoy spending time in nature and are keen on birdwatching, can visit Incekum and Kaletepe Birdwatching Towers. Those who want to capture the natural beauties of Şile can both shoot photo and enjoy the landscape in 10 different photo benches placed along the beach. Again, within the scope of the project, you can spend time with your family and friends in 6 new recreation spots organized in where the tree population is rich. If you want to taste the local flavours of Şile, you can visit the roadside counters set up in Teke and İmrendere villages.
