Kaletepe recreation area, located at the east of Yeniköy, is a place where thousands of predators can be observed in a day. The bird watching tower is located about 11 kilometers from Şile. You can observe crowded flocks of predators and storks on the sky of Şile especially during the days when Istanbul is under the dominance of southern winds.
The most common species to be seen during migration are hawk (Buteo buteo), lesser spotted eagle (Aquila pomarina), short-toed eagle (Circeatus gallicus), honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus) and sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus). Eurasia East Africa migration route is one of the most important migration corridors on global aspect. This migration route connects Europe and West Siberia to South Africa over the Middle East. The three most used migration bottlenecks in the Middle East are Babülmendep (Babel Mandep), Suez and the Bosporus. The Bosporus is the main migration route connecting Europe to Asia.
Migration is the name of annual seasonalmovement of birds on a regular basis between breeding and wintering grounds.Birds travel enormous distances across vast geographies including continents. This is mostly due to a change in nutrient abundance. Migration of birds is a process requiring a lot of energy, so migration strategies of birds directly affect their survival chances. Migrating predators or large birds such as storks, pelicans, cranes minimize their energy consumption based on twirling rising and gliding during migration. Hot air columns, which are called thermal, develop from the heated land surfaces.
Soaring birds turn and rise by taking advantage of the buoyancy of the rising air mass that warms up, and glide from this point as sliding in the direction they want to go. Birds gliding along their migration set their routes in such a way that they pass over land surfaces with thermal characteristic and leave as quickly as possible the thermally poor or risky geographies such as deserts, mountains, glaciers and seas. The spots where natural barriers are frequent and migration is stuck and where there is a sea passage or land bridge are called “migration bottleneck”. You can observe incredibly large groups of birds.
