You can arrive Sahilköy, located 23 kilometres west of Şile, by following the Sofular village road signs. You can photograph the endless beach from here in Sahilköy. This place is also home to Şile’s most popular beaches and camping sites. Sand habitats on the coastline are home to important sand floras such as sea daffodil (Pancratium maritimum). Sahilköy is an ancient settlement that has its origins in the Byzantine Empire. Turkmen families came to this region after the 15th century. It is claimed that Sahilköy’s former name “Domalı” originates from the Damalı sect of the Yörükhan tribe. There is also an ancient settlement on the Dereağzı hill next to the Göztepe and Kazlar creeks.
The archaeological site in where prehistoric tools were found dates back to the epipalaeolithic period (7500 BC). Basalt columns, worm-shaped boulders are eye-catching geological formations on the shore. Sahilköy coasts came into prominence as one of Turkey’s most important plant sites. Coasts of Sahilköy (Şile) are home to 16 rare plants in total, six of which are endemic to the coast of Turkey. Very rich communities of the plants, which are considered to be endangered on a global scale, such as woodruff (Asperula littoralis), Kilyos knapweed (Centaurea kilaea), Blacksea catchfly (Silene sangaria) and coastal mullein (Verbascum degenii) grow in this area. In this area stretching between Karaburun and Şile, the dunes extend inward for approximately one kilometre. Sand holly (Eryngium maritimum), mammoth wildrye (Leymus racemosus ssp. sabulosus), Kilyos knapweed, sea daffodil and seakale (Crambe maritima) communities spread on the foreshore. Sea cole is among the rare plants in the country.
